Early in 2004 a sketchy idea that we should have themed days developed in SSU. It was decided these days would occur on Sundays, and if possible, weekly. It's still going on over a year later, though interest has waned somewhat. Please note that participation is not mandatory, but it is of course encouraged. Below are listed, in chronological order, the themes of the past, by year.
| ~ 2005 ~ |
~ Ecchi Av Day ~ 1/25/04 ~ Suggested by the perennial pervert, Red. This too was a simple idea: use a mildly sexual image as an avatar. The women didn't seem to like this idea much, although they were told the image didn't necessarily need females in it... Oh well! ~ Rearrange Day ~ 2/1/04 ~ This theme had two elements: the letters of your name were to be rearranged, and the characters in your hexadecimal colors were to be rearranged as well. The original idea was simply to rearrange the handle, but it was decided, particularly with so many short handles, that this theme needed a little something else. ~ Identity Switch Day ~ 2/8/04 ~ Easily the most interesting theme day so far, despite the small number of active participants. This was an idea that had been tossed around long before the advent of theme days, but was never really carried out. Look at the log for this day and see if you can figure out who is who! Pretty sure of yourself? Check here to see if you've got it all figured out. Pretty shocking, huh? ~ Face Handle Day ~ 2/22/04 ~ The concept here was to use one of the chat faces (or another small sprite or image) as your handle. This theme started fairly late in the day, but it was still somewhat interesting. ~ RPG Boss Day ~ 2/29/04 ~ Suggested by Nicky, the idea of this day was to pose as a villain or boss from any RPG. The theme started right at the beginning of the day, but the log didn't really get going until the end of the day, so this theme was of middling success. However, there were some cool avatars. ~ Blue Blue Day ~ 3/07/04 ~ This idea came from a random quote about the Happy Happyists of Earthbound. If you've played the game, it's pretty simple to surmise what we did: we painted everything blue. Our avatars, or text, and even our emoticons. It didn't seem like much of a theme at first, but it ended up generating the second largest log of the year to that point. ~ Squaresoft Creature Day ~ 3/14/04 ~ This idea sort of stemmed from RPG Boss Day. Participants posed as creatures, mostly enemies, from games such as CT, Xenogears, and various FFs. Not an overwhelmingly busy day. ~ Gender Swap Day ~ 3/21/04 ~ This wasn't too bad, particularly given the almost total lack of female and thus "male" participants. Obviously the idea was to be a member of the opposite sex. Mostly people played off stereotypes, but it was pretty amusing. ~ Mythological Creature Day ~ 3/28/04 ~ Spin-off of Squaresoft Creature Day. Quite frankly, it sucked. Minimal participation from everyone, and not many people were around anyway. Okay idea, pathetic execution of it. Oh well, they can't all be grand. ~ Celebrity Crush Day ~ 4/4/04 ~ Scarlett...er, uh. The theme here was to have an avatar of a celebrity you're attracted to. Pretty simple. Themes relegated to just the avatar, though, don't do a whole lot for the chat log. ~ Bunny Av Day ~ 4/11/04 ~ Another avatar theme. You'll never guess who suggested it. No, seriously. You won't. Ever. So, you know, Easter and all. Pretty self-explanatory. ~ Classic Class Day ~ 4/18/04 ~ Suggested by Rusey, this theme was to be a class from an FF which had readily identifiable classes (3j, 5, T, TA). Not half bad. ~ RP Character Day ~ 4/25/04 ~ This theme involved playing as a character from a roleplay, SSU or otherwise. D&D and FFB characters predominated. ~ Sailor Moon Day ~ 5/2/04 ~ Begged by Nadia (and the last theme you're getting for a while, womaaaaaan), this theme explains itself. SM characters. Middling participation. ~ Mecha Day ~ 5/9/04 ~ Of course if Nadia gets something Red has to have something too. Characters from anime and shows involving robots. Not a whole lot went on besides handle changes. ~ Pet Day ~ 5/16/04 ~ People as pets. Woo. Suggested by Nadia. ~ Harry Potter Day ~ 6/6/04 ~ This theme, obviously involved characters from Harry Potter. One of our better recent themes. ~ Initials Day ~ 6/13/04 ~ Self-explanatory. Red was the only person to even have an avatar for this. Wasn't much to do with this theme, but better than not having one. ~ Pantsless Day ~ 6/20/04 ~ I'm sure you can guess what happened here. One theme that actually involved people physically doing something. Not too many people had avatars for it, though, which was really all it had to make it interesting. (Amy, Cecil, DP, Janus) ~ Smash Bros. Day ~ 6/27/04 ~ From the SMASH hits Super Smash Brothers and Super Smash Brothers: Melee. Smash. Heeeee. But, yeah. Characters from those. Obviously. ~ Red and/or White and/or Blue Day ~ 7/4/04 ~ Coinciding with Independence day, could there be any other theme? Included forced gradients that caused trouble with emoticons and a nifty background, but it wasn't too shabby. ~ Animated Portrait Day ~ 7/11/04 ~ This was an avatar theme featuring generated portraits from a Japanese script. These same protraits are now used as avatars in the blog. I even made a pair for Carl and Shecarl. This theme was a lot of fun, and did pretty well for an avatar focused theme. ~ Wheel of Time Day ~ 7/18/04 ~ This theme featured characters from Robert Jordan's epic fantasy series Wheel of Time. A few of them, anyway. This theme didn't have a lot of support. Even from some people who HAD read the books. In fact, there was some resistance to the theme. It was kind of annoying. This may later spawn a more general fantasy book themed day. Because this one went nowhere, less so than Harry Potter. ~ Superhero Day ~ 7/25/04 ~ Yet another last minute save by Rusey. This theme featured superheroes, predominantly from comic books, including avatars. It would've been cool if everyone used a comic book avatar, but it didn't work out that way. Too bad. Not a bad theme, but it didn't do much for the log. ~ Inanimate Object Day ~ 8/1/04 ~ Rusey seems to have single-handedly preserving the tradition for almost a month. This theme is pretty straightforward. Some people used a few things that weren't technically inanimate, but it was a pretty good theme anyway, especially compared to other last minute spawned ideas. Go Rusey! ~ CT Day ~ 8/8/04 ~ Theme day featuring characters from Chrono Trigger. Crono in particular was a lot of fun, portrayed only by several animated sprites throughout the day. ~ Superstition Day ~ 8/15/04 ~ Coinciding with the tail-end of SSUCon, this theme day didn't get a lot of support, but the idea was to be some kind of superstition that involved either good or bad luck. Creative idea, not a particularly exciting execution though. ~ CC Day ~ 8/22/04 ~ Following up after CT Day, this theme featured characters from the "sequel", Chrono Cross. Wasn't nearly as interesting, honestly. No real roleplaying at all. ~ B&W Day ~ 8/29/04 ~ This theme featured characters from black and white films. The chat and log were also kept in grayscale, and the avatars were also monochrome, though not necessarily gray. Pretty cool, if I do say so myself. ~ TAY Day ~ 9/5/04 ~ The ultimate theme...well, okay, just a bit biased. This theme fell on Janus' birthday, and you might've guessed he had something to do with the selection of the theme. Pretty simple - stick some TAY in your avatar. Ohhhhhh meaaaaaaaan. ~ Lords and Ladies Day ~ 9/12/04 ~ This theme was intended to involve titles with "Lord" or "Lady" in them and for the titleists to roleplay off those titles, but some people ended up choosing specific people just happened to have Lord or Lady in their name. Still, it worked, and it was decent for the most part, though more than a quarter of the day's log came after the theme was over. ~ Tales Day ~ 9/19/04 ~ This theme's intention involved characters from the varios Tales games (Phantasia, Destiny, Eternia, Symphonia), but again, it got bent to include loose associations with the name. Not as successful logsize-wise (that's fun to say!) as the previous theme, but at least only a sixth of this log came after the theme ended. ~ Movie Character Day ~ 9/26/04 ~ Broad beyond bending, right? WRONG! Except, well, it wasn't bent, so. This theme featured, well, characters from movies. Don't look at me, I had nothing to do with it. It was last minute. There have been shabbier themes. The day actually started off really well, but it stopped short pretty early on and the log was ultimately pretty small. Oh, but for more active participation... ~ Janus Day ~ 10/3/04 ~ In honor of Janus' lack of a phone line (and thus internet access), it was decided that SSUers should come as some aspect of Janus, be he Site Maintainer, File Snooper, Log Reader, Photographer, Sayer of WOMAAAAAAAAAN, or hopeless romantic. We all agree that it was a fine idea, and it turned out what's sadly considered to be an average log these days. Still, that's something for a Sunday, and it was fun being Janus, be we enjoying his music, giving wisdom, or just using HTML tags for picture faces instead of the shortcuts that he set up for us. ~ Mascot Day ~ 10/10/04 ~ Another tragic theme day without Janus, this log didn't even make it to 50 kb. The idea, however, was to be one of your school's mascots. ~ Future Day ~ 10/17/04 ~ This theme day did a good deal better. The idea was to be some idea, person, or thing from the future. There were some pretty funny choices. ~ Romance Novel Day ~ 10/24/04 ~ On this day, suggested by Aaron, people posed as characters from romance novels. Not that many of us read romance novels, but there are certain archetypal characters and names that just sound positively trashy. So that's what we used. It was fun. But it would've been a lot more fun if we roleplayed the day. Rowr. ~ Favorite Food Day ~ 10/31/04 ~ Why isn't this a Halloween theme day, you ask? Well, Hero's birthday takes precedence, and this is what he wanted. And this is what he got. And he barely participated at all. That LOUT. ~ Music Day ~ 11/7/04 ~ This was obviously another one of those Randofu on the spot deals. "Hey, guys, let's be whatever we're listening to!" "Um...okay." And so we did. And we lived happily for some time, but died after. The End. ~ Character Day ~ 11/14/04 ~ No, not like people. Like symbols and letters and numbers. Mostly symbols, everything else is too boring. Yes, this was another one of Rusey's on the spot ideas. Won't somebody please come up with something beforehand?! ~ Wizard of Oz Day ~ 11/21/04 ~ Weeeee're off to see the wizaaaaaaaard... This was prompted by a TNT showing of the movie. Everybody was a character from it or the sequel. Actually worked out pretty well. ~ Vavalion Day ~ 11/28/04 ~ Well, if we have a Janus day, why not a Vav day? Because Vav doesn't want a Vav day. But too bad, Vav. You're just lucky nobody decided to be "Matt Smith". Don't think I hadn't thought of it then, either. This day, unlike Janus day, involved being a Vav name rather than an aspect of his personality or whatnot. It was fun, though. Vavvyyyyyyy. ~ Coot and Stupid Looking Day ~ 12/5/04 ~ I don't need to tell you whose idea this was, or what it's about. I mean, honestly. Cute. Stupid-looking. What else could there be to it? ~ Unlikely Protagonist Day ~ 12/12/04 ~ We all know the archetypes of heroes. The tough guy rebel, the clueless young brash guy, the FOR GREAT JUSTICE or FOR GREAT VENGEANCE guys. What about that nerd who turns an old iron into a slime generator? The lovesick girl that the male lead never ends up liking? This theme was a celebration of those unsung heroes. ~ Sleepy Day ~ 12/19/04 ~ As the trend of last-minute half-hearted themes continues, Sleepy Day emerges to accomplish nothing special. Much lethargy was had by all. Thus a year of theming was completed, for there was no theme after Christmas. How many weeks went by themeless? Only six. 46 themes in a year ain't bad, even if some of them weren't so great.
